Where do stains and discoloration originate?
Teeth stains, both intrinsic and extrinsic, come from a variety of sources that you can’t always simply avoid to maintain your white teeth. The stains and discoloration affecting your teeth can be:
Extrinsic
Extrinsic stains usually come from foods and other substances. They develop when pigment gets trapped in the porous outer enamel layer. Common causes of extrinsic stains include tobacco, coffee, red wine, tea, and berries.
Intrinsic
Intrinsic stains affect deeper layers of your tooth than the enamel, like the dentin. They often come from conditions, medications, and genetic factors, like fluorosis, chemotherapy, antibiotics, and aging.
Even though extrinsic stains are easier to remove, Dr. Tran can work with you to select a type of bleach that will lighten your intrinsic staining too.
How long do the results of teeth whitening last?
Teeth whitening results aren’t permanent because the processes and substances that cause staining can still affect your teeth after a whitening session. To maintain your results, you should follow aftercare instructions closely after your treatment. This includes:
- Avoiding highly pigmented foods and drinks for at least 24 hours
- Avoiding smoking and tobacco for at least 24 hours
- Brushing your teeth at least twice daily, or after every meal
- Getting regular whitening treatments as needed
