Dental Fillings

Types of Fillings

Dental fillings are a common restorative treatment used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay, wear, or trauma. The filling material is used to replace the damaged or decayed part of the tooth, restoring its function and appearance.

There are several types of dental fillings available, including:

  1. Amalgam fillings: These are made from a mixture of metals, including silver, copper, and mercury. Amalgam fillings are strong and durable, and can last for many years.  As a cosmetic dental office with a more holistic approach, we do not offer amalgam fillings here at Supreme Dental.
  2. Composite fillings: These are made from a tooth-colored resin material that is bonded to the tooth. Composite fillings are aesthetically pleasing, but may not be as durable as amalgam fillings.
  3. Ceramic fillings: These are made from porcelain or other ceramic materials that are matched to the color of the tooth. Ceramic fillings are very strong and durable, but are more expensive than other types of fillings.
  4. Glass ionomer fillings: These are made from a mixture of acrylic and glass powders, and are used to fill small cavities in the teeth. Glass ionomer fillings are not as strong as other types of fillings, but they release fluoride which helps prevent further decay.

During the filling procedure, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth and remove any decayed or damaged tooth material. The filling material is then placed in the prepared cavity and shaped to match the natural contour of the tooth. The filling is then cured or hardened with a special light, and polished to a smooth finish.

After the filling procedure, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including brushing and flossing regularly, to prevent further decay and maintain the longevity of the filling. Regular dental checkups and cleanings are also important to ensure the filling remains intact and in good condition.

Dental Composites

Dental composite is a tooth-colored resin material used in a variety of dental applications, including dental fillings, bonding, and veneers. Composite materials are made of a mixture of plastic and glass or ceramic particles, which give the material its strength and aesthetic properties.

Composite fillings are often used as an alternative to amalgam fillings, as they are more aesthetically pleasing and blend in with the natural color of the tooth. The composite material is applied to the tooth in layers and cured, or hardened, with a special light. The filling is then shaped and polished to match the natural contour of the tooth.

Composite bonding is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored, chipped, or misshapen. The composite material is applied to the surface of the tooth and sculpted to achieve the desired shape and size. The material is then cured with a special light and polished to a smooth finish.

Composite veneers are thin shells of composite material that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth. They are used to improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored, chipped, or misshapen.  Composite veneers are more affordable than porcelain veneers, but they are not as durable and may require more frequent replacement. This is the main reason why we do not offer this service.

Overall, dental composite is a versatile and durable material that is widely used in modern dentistry for a variety of applications. With proper care and maintenance, composite restorations can last for many years and provide excellent functional and aesthetic results.

Visible Signs That You Need a Tooth Filling

Sometimes, there are visible signs that you need a filling. These symptoms include the following:
• Dark spots on your teeth
• A hole you can see or feel in your teeth
• Food that always gets stuck between certain teeth
• When your floss tears in a certain spot
• A rough, chipped, or broken tooth
• A broken or lost filling

Toothache

A toothache may be the most common sign that you might need a tooth filling. But, sensitivity to certain temperatures, to pressure, or too sweet foods are also indicators that you need a filling. Finally, if you experience sudden or throbbing pain when biting or chewing, you also might need a tooth filling. .

Do You Need a Tooth Filling?

When getting a cavity-filled hurt, Tooth fillings help dentists repair cavities, so they don’t become bigger dental problems down the road. Fillings can fill small holes caused by tooth decay, but they can also repair cracks and fractures in teeth.
Left untreated, tooth decay can cause serious problems. Your dentist can design a prevention plan so root canals or even tooth extractions are never needed. The bottom line is tooth fillings are a good thing and they can keep you smiling for a long, long time.  If you think you need a filling, contact Dr. Mason Tran at Supreme Dental today.
